Why Fatal Collision Investigations Take Longer
Fatal traffic collisions typically require a more extensive examination than crashes involving only property damage or minor injuries. Investigators document vehicle positions, roadway evidence, debris patterns, and damage to help determine how the collision occurred.
Specialized equipment may be used to measure the roadway and preserve physical evidence before damaged vehicles are removed. In some cases, vehicles are retained for further examination after being towed from the roadway. Because of the detailed review required, road closures and traffic delays can last for several hours while investigators complete their work and the roadway is prepared to reopen safely.
