Cannon Twp., MI (June 30, 2026) – One person died, and another was injured on Monday morning, June 29, after a crash on Pettis Avenue NE in Cannon Township. The accident happened around 6:19 a.m. near 5 Mile Road, about four miles west of Cannonsburg.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office said a car went out of control before it tipped over and hit a guardrail. Deputies said the driver had minor injuries.

A 25-year-old passenger from Jackson was critically injured in the crash. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The sheriff’s office did not release the names of the people involved in the first report. Pettis Avenue NE was closed for several hours after the collision but has since reopened. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the passenger who died, and we hope the injured driver recovers safely.

Why Rollover Crashes Can Lead to Fatal Injuries

Rollover crashes can be especially dangerous because a vehicle may strike the ground, a fixed object, or both before coming to rest. The force can injure people inside even when the crash involves only one car.

Guardrail impacts can also add to the damage. When a vehicle tips over and hits a barrier, the roof, doors, windows, and passenger space may all be affected.

After a fatal rollover accident, investigators may review vehicle movement, road layout, guardrail damage, tire marks, and final resting position. These details can help explain how the car left its lane, tipped over, and struck the barrier.
