Davidson County, NC (July 23, 2026) – A woman died, and two drivers were hospitalized after a three-vehicle accident on Wednesday, July 22, on U.S. 64 at Heath Church Road. Emergency units arrived around 8:32 p.m. after a tractor-trailer left the highway and hit a utility pole and a tree.

Investigators said the tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle were traveling east. The passenger vehicle slowed to turn left into a private driveway, and the truck struck it from behind while attempting to move right.

The force pushed the passenger vehicle into the westbound lane, where it collided with an SUV. The tractor-trailer crossed the center line and stopped in a ditch, while the passenger vehicle overturned in another ditch.

The woman driving the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead. The tractor-trailer driver and SUV driver were taken to local hospitals, though their medical status was not released. The wreck also caused a power outage in the area.

Charges are considered likely against the truck driver, and the crash review remains active. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the woman’s family and friends and wish those injured a speedy recovery.

Why Rear-End Impacts Can Trigger Multi-Vehicle Highway Collisions

Rear-end impacts can become especially dangerous when a vehicle is slowing to turn across traffic. A strong push from behind may force the front vehicle into another lane, placing it directly in the path of oncoming drivers.

Vehicle size and weight can greatly affect the force involved. Large commercial trucks need more distance to slow down, especially when carrying heavy loads. Road grade, speed, following distance, and driver attention can influence whether a safe stop is possible.

Safety reviews may examine tire marks, vehicle damage, roadway alignment, and the final resting positions of each vehicle. Utility poles, trees, ditches, and other roadside features can pose additional danger after the initial point of contact. Seat belt use and structural protection may also affect the severity of harm to drivers and passengers.
