San Luis Obispo Co., CA (August 28, 2026) – One person was killed and two others were seriously injured late on Wednesday night, August 26, in a five-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 101 along the Cuesta Grade. The collision happened at approximately 11:25 p.m. just south of Hawk Hill Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a vehicle traveling the wrong way on southbound Highway 101 collided head-on with a Dodge Charger. Three additional vehicles then crashed into the first two vehicles, blocking the southbound lanes.

A 55-year-old passenger in the Dodge died at the scene. The Dodge driver was taken to Adventist Health Sierra Vista with major injuries. The wrong-way driver was also transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

CHP said the wrong-way driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and possibly drugs. The crash remains under investigation.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the passenger who died, and we hope those injured recover fully.

Why Can Wrong-Way Crashes Trigger Multi-Vehicle Pileups?

Wrong-way collisions can occur with little warning, particularly on freeways where vehicles traveling in opposite directions may close distance very quickly.

An initial head-on impact can leave damaged or disabled vehicles blocking active lanes. Following motorists may have limited time or space to stop or change lanes, increasing the risk of secondary collisions.

Travel speed, visibility, traffic spacing, roadway layout, and the position of damaged vehicles can all influence how a crash develops. When several vehicles become involved, emergency crews may also need to manage multiple patients while securing a large section of roadway.
