Early Morning Pedestrian Crashes Can Be Difficult to Prevent
Pedestrian crashes before sunrise can be dangerous because visibility is usually limited. Drivers may have trouble seeing someone near the roadway, especially when headlights, shadows, and dark clothing affect what can be seen.
Morning travel can also bring steady traffic from people heading to work, school, or nearby businesses. At intersections and busy roads, drivers may be turning, slowing, or watching for traffic signals while pedestrians move nearby.
Even when injuries are not life-threatening, a person on foot can still face pain, shock, and a long recovery after being hit by a vehicle. Reviews after these accidents usually look at lighting, crosswalk access, driver movement, road design, and where the person on foot was before contact.
