Why Is Traffic Signal Compliance Reviewed After Pedestrian Collisions?
Traffic signals are designed to organize the movement of vehicles and pedestrians through busy intersections. When a pedestrian is struck near a signalized crossing, investigators review whether traffic controls were being followed by everyone involved. Signal timing, visibility, and witness observations can all become part of the review process.
Pedestrians are particularly vulnerable in roadway encounters because they lack the physical protection available to people inside vehicles. Even at relatively low speeds, a person on foot can experience serious harm when struck. For that reason, intersections are frequently examined closely to determine how movements occurred before contact was made.
Reviews may also consider roadway design, traffic volume, weather conditions, and visibility at the time. Witness statements can help establish a sequence of actions leading up to the collision. These details provide additional context as investigators work to better understand how pedestrian crashes happen and what circumstances may have been present.
