Charlotte, NC (July 31, 2026) – One person was injured after a wreck closed all southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near Sam Wilson Road in west Charlotte on Thursday afternoon, July 30, according to Medic officials. Crews initially closed three lanes before shutting down the entire southbound side.

Backups stretched about four miles to Billy Graham Parkway during the already congested afternoon rush. The injured person was taken for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries. All lanes had reopened by 4:10 p.m.

We hope the injured person has a full recovery.

Why Do Crews Sometimes Escalate From Partial to Full Highway Closures?

A crash response starts with the minimum closure needed, blocking only the lanes directly affected while crews assess the situation. As more information comes in, officials may determine that a wider closure is necessary for safety or to give crews enough room to work.

This escalation can happen for several reasons, including the need for additional equipment, a more thorough investigation, or concerns about visibility for passing traffic. Closing the entire side of a highway, rather than leaving a lane open, reduces the risk of a secondary crash near the original one.

Rush-hour timing adds pressure to reopen quickly, but safety considerations generally take priority over minimizing delays. Once crews have finished their work and confirmed the roadway is clear, lanes are typically reopened in stages rather than all at once.
