West End, NC (August 31, 2026) – Traffic was slowed Saturday night at NC 73 and Murdocksville Road following an accident involving two vehicles that left one person injured and prompted emergency services’ response. The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. on August 29.

A Toyota Camry traveling north on Murdocksville Road attempted to cross NC 73 and entered the path of a westbound Honda CR-V. The vehicles collided, with the Toyota struck on both its front and rear during the accident. The Honda rolled at least once before both vehicles came to rest upright near the northwest corner of the intersection.

The Honda driver was taken to Moore Regional Hospital with injuries that appeared to be non-life-threatening. Neither person in the Toyota required transportation to a hospital. The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the Honda was traveling without its headlights on, and a witness who had followed the vehicle before the collision confirmed this detail.

One lane of NC 73 was briefly closed while crews worked at the scene. Both vehicles were later towed from the area. Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and wishing them a full recovery.

How Can Visibility Affect Safety at Nighttime Intersections?

Visibility is a major factor when vehicles travel after dark. Headlights help drivers see roadway features, signs, other vehicles, and people ahead. They also help other road users recognize an approaching vehicle.

An intersection can become more difficult to navigate when one vehicle is less visible than expected. Drivers may have limited time to identify another vehicle before entering a crossing, particularly when traffic is moving in different directions. Street lighting and weather conditions can also affect visibility.

Drivers should use their headlights whenever conditions require them and remain alert when approaching intersections. Checking for approaching traffic before crossing or turning can provide additional time to respond. Proper visibility can help reduce the risk of nighttime accidents.
