Why Hit-and-Run Fatalities Prompt Thorough Criminal Investigations
Fatal hit-and-run crashes are investigated both as traffic collisions and potential criminal cases. Investigators work to reconstruct the sequence of events by examining the crash scene, collecting physical evidence, interviewing witnesses, and, when available, reviewing surveillance or dash-cam footage.
When a suspected driver is quickly located, officers may inspect the vehicle for damage, document evidence, and determine whether impairment, distraction, speed, or other factors contributed to the collision. These investigative steps help establish what occurred and support any criminal or traffic-related proceedings that may follow.
