Montague, NY (August 8, 2026) – One person was killed on Thursday evening after a pickup truck struck a UTV on Liberty Rd in Lewis County. The fatal accident happened at approximately 5:06 p.m. on August 6.
Two UTVs had stopped while traveling northbound because a 2023 Yamaha was disabled by a broken belt. The operator of a 2024 Polaris turned around and attempted to tow the disabled UTV when a northbound 2023 Ram pickup struck it, then spun and overturned. Its operator, 61-year-old Michael E. Rounds of Carthage, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Afterward, the pickup driver attempted to move into the southbound lane and struck a third UTV. The 2017 Polaris was operated by 80-year-old John I. Failing of Pearl River. Failing and 26-year-old Lucas J. Goutermout of Copenhagen, who drove the pickup, were not hurt and remained at the scene.
A Drug Recognition Expert conducted standardized field sobriety testing on Goutermout. No signs of impairment were observed. The investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding the wreck.
