Why Are Pedestrian Crashes on Highways Especially Dangerous?
Pedestrian crashes on highways often result in severe outcomes due to high vehicle speeds and limited reaction time. Unlike city streets, highways are not designed for foot traffic, and drivers may not expect to encounter someone walking in travel lanes.
Low visibility during overnight hours can make it harder for drivers to see a person ahead. Curves, merging lanes, and changing traffic patterns may also reduce the time available to react and avoid a collision.
When a pedestrian is struck on a highway, the risk of additional impacts can increase if other vehicles are unable to stop in time. Road design and speed differences between vehicles and pedestrians contribute to the severity of these incidents.
