Owasso, OK (March 4, 2026) – A pedestrian lost their life in a crash on Wednesday morning, March 4, on southbound Highway 169 in Owasso. The collision happened between 86th Street N and 96th Street N, prompting authorities to shut down both southbound lanes for several hours.
Traffic was backed up to at least 96th Street N as emergency units worked at the scene. Video from local traffic cameras showed vehicles at a standstill while investigators examined the roadway.
Officials confirmed that the person who was killed was not a construction worker. The driver involved in the crash was not hurt.
The accident occurred near an active construction zone where lanes narrow and shift between 66th Street N and 86th Street N. The speed limit in that area has been reduced to 55 mph due to ongoing roadwork. Southbound lanes have since reopened.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Road Construction Zones Can Increase Risk for Pedestrians
Construction zones often change normal traffic patterns. Lanes may narrow, shift, or merge with little room for error. Reduced speed limits are common, but drivers do not always adjust quickly to them.
For pedestrians, these areas can be especially dangerous. Barriers, heavy equipment, and unclear walk paths can limit visibility for both drivers and pedestrians. In some cases, fewer marked crossings or sidewalks may be available during active roadwork.
Drivers are generally encouraged to slow down and stay alert in construction zones. Even small distractions can have serious consequences when space is limited and traffic flow is altered.
