Why Multi-Lane Highway Crossings Can Be Risky for Pedestrians
Crossing a multi-lane highway like Hwy 49 N can be dangerous, especially in areas with steady traffic flow. Even when traffic signals are present, drivers may focus on vehicle movement rather than looking for people crossing outside designated crosswalks.
Roadways near retail locations often see higher traffic volumes during evening hours. Drivers may be accelerating through green lights, which can reduce reaction time if someone enters the roadway unexpectedly. Lighting conditions at night can also affect visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.
Pedestrian crashes on highways frequently result in serious injuries due to vehicle speed and limited protection. Clear crosswalk markings, pedestrian signals, and increased awareness among both drivers and pedestrians may help reduce the risk of similar incidents.
