Portland, OR (May 29, 2026) – A man was critically injured early Thursday morning, May 28, after being struck by a vehicle in Portland’s Buckman neighborhood.
The crash happened around 2:55 a.m. at Southeast Grand Avenue and Southeast Pine Street. Portland police said officers responded after a report of a crash, and emergency medical crews arrived first to treat the injured pedestrian.
Police later determined that the driver initially left the scene after striking the pedestrian but returned later. The driver, identified as 29-year-old Natasha D. Capestany of Portland, was at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition. His name and age were not released in the initial report.
Capestany was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on a felony charge of failure to perform the duties of a driver involving injury.
The crash remains under investigation. We hope the injured man receives strong care and support during recovery.
Why Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accidents Can Be Severe
Hit-and-run pedestrian accidents can be especially serious because the injured person may need immediate medical care. When a driver leaves the scene, emergency responders may have fewer details about the vehicle, direction of travel, and timing of the crash.
Pedestrians have little protection when struck by a vehicle, and injuries may affect the head, chest, spine, hips, legs, or internal organs. Early morning crashes can also be harder to investigate because there may be fewer witnesses and lower visibility. Investigators may review nearby cameras, witness statements, vehicle damage, debris, and roadway markings to understand how the collision occurred.
