Pedestrian Fatalities Outside Designated Crosswalks
Pedestrian crashes can occur when individuals attempt to cross roadways at locations not specifically designated for pedestrian travel. These incidents are influenced by factors such as visibility, vehicle speed, roadway design, lighting conditions, and driver reaction time.
Investigators examining fatal pedestrian collisions typically review physical evidence from the scene, vehicle damage, surveillance footage, witness statements, and roadway characteristics to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Early morning and nighttime hours can present additional challenges for both drivers and pedestrians due to reduced visibility. Transportation safety officials continue to emphasize the importance of using marked crosswalks whenever available and remaining alert to pedestrian activity along roadways.
