According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the roadway had been blocked by a tree brought down during severe storms. A group of people was clearing debris in heavy rain when a utility truck came over a hill shortly before 7:30 p.m. and was unable to stop before striking a person working in the road.
The pedestrian was taken to Mission Hospital with serious injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under review as investigators continue gathering information.
