Why Crosswalk Collisions Remain a Serious Safety Concern
Pedestrians using marked crosswalks rely on drivers to recognize and yield when required by law. However, turning movements at intersections can create situations where drivers focus on vehicle traffic and fail to notice pedestrians entering or already within the crosswalk.
Investigators reviewing pedestrian crashes examine traffic signals, roadway design, visibility conditions, vehicle movements, and witness statements. These factors can help establish how the collision occurred and whether right-of-way violations contributed to the incident.
Even when injuries are not life-threatening, pedestrian accidents can result in significant physical and emotional impacts. Authorities frequently use evidence gathered at the scene to better understand the circumstances of the crash and identify opportunities to improve roadway safety.
