What Factors Can Increase the Risk of Pedestrian Crashes?
Pedestrian crashes can result in severe or fatal injuries because people walking have little physical protection against moving vehicles. Risk can increase at night, on roads with limited visibility, or where vehicles travel faster. Distracted driving, impaired driving, failure to yield, and poor visibility can also contribute.
Drivers should remain alert when traveling near sidewalks, crosswalks, intersections, and areas with pedestrian activity. Reducing speed can provide more time to react to someone entering the roadway. Motorists should avoid using handheld devices and never drive while impaired. Pedestrians can improve visibility by using marked crossings and wearing reflective clothing in low-light conditions. Following traffic signals and remaining attentive can help both drivers and pedestrians reduce roadway risks.
