Why Highway Pedestrian Crashes Are Often Fatal
Pedestrian crashes on highways are frequently severe because vehicles travel at much higher speeds than on city streets. Drivers may also have limited time to react when a person enters active traffic lanes, especially on roads designed primarily for continuous vehicle flow rather than foot traffic.
Investigators examining these crashes often review lighting conditions, roadway visibility, traffic speed, and the pedestrian’s path before contact occurred. Multi-vehicle pedestrian collisions can become even more complicated because investigators must determine the sequence of impacts and whether drivers had an opportunity to avoid the person in the roadway. Long highway closures are common during these investigations, allowing crews to safely document evidence and reconstruct the collision sequence.
