Why Are Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Collisions Especially Challenging to Investigate?
Hit-and-run pedestrian collisions require investigators to rely on multiple sources of evidence to identify the vehicle and reconstruct what happened. Witness statements, surveillance video, vehicle debris, and physical evidence from the roadway can all help establish the sequence of actions.
To better understand how the collision occurred, investigators may look at lighting conditions, crosswalk locations, roadway design, and traffic direction. Information released to the public about the suspected vehicle can sometimes assist in locating it. As additional evidence becomes available, investigators work to develop a more complete picture of the circumstances surrounding the fatal roadway collision.
