Why Are Pedestrian Crashes More Dangerous at Night?
Pedestrian crashes that occur during overnight hours often present greater risks because visibility is reduced for everyone using the road. Darkness can make it harder for drivers to see people crossing or walking near travel lanes, especially in areas with limited street lighting. Weather conditions, roadway design, and vehicle speed can also affect how quickly a driver can recognize and react to someone ahead.
Older adults may face additional risks due to slower movement and increased physical vulnerability. Even at moderate speeds, the force involved can cause severe harm. Safety experts often emphasize the value of adequate lighting, clearly marked crossings, reflective clothing, and driver awareness during nighttime travel. These measures can help improve visibility and reduce the likelihood of serious pedestrian-related roadway incidents.
