Phelan, CA (January 26, 2026) – A tragic head-on accident on SR-18 near Shandin Rd on January 23 resulted in the deaths of three individuals after both vehicles involved caught fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred just before 7 a.m. when a silver Cadillac, traveling eastbound on SR-18, attempted to pass another vehicle. While doing so, it entered the westbound lane and collided head-on with a Tesla traveling in the opposite direction.
Authorities reported that the impact of the crash caused both vehicles to ignite, resulting in a dangerous fire that further complicated rescue efforts. Emergency crews responded promptly, but despite their efforts, two occupants inside the Tesla and one person from the Cadillac were pronounced dead at the scene.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released as officials continue to notify next of kin. The severity of the incident led to a temporary closure of the area as investigators and fire crews worked to manage the wreckage and begin a detailed collision analysis.
Officials with CHP have confirmed that the investigation is still underway to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether any additional factors played a role.
