Polk County, FL (April 4, 2026) – A Winter Park man was killed on Wednesday morning in a crash involving two semi-tractors about ten miles north of Lakeland on US 98 North near SR 471.
The collision occurred around 10:50 a.m. on April 1. Deputies reported that 44-year-old Gabriel Lorenzo Beauford was found deceased in the cab of his 2008 Volvo semi-tractor after it struck the rear of a 2023 Mack truck hauling timber.
Preliminary information indicates the Mack truck entered a left turn lane to proceed east onto SR 471. Beauford’s truck, following behind, apparently did not slow in time and collided with the protruding timber, which pierced the cab and trailer. Hazardous material from the cargo spilled at the scene.
The driver of the Mack truck, a 34-year-old man from Ocala, was uninjured. Emergency units and multiple agencies assisted with the cleanup. The roadway was closed for approximately seven hours.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Why Semi-Truck Collisions Can Be Fatal
Collisions between large trucks can be particularly deadly due to their size, weight, and cargo. Even when drivers follow safety regulations, sudden changes in speed or lane position can result in severe impacts.
Cargo that extends beyond a trailer, like timber, can penetrate cabs or other vehicles in a collision, increasing the risk of fatal injuries. The force of these impacts is often enough to cause structural damage to both vehicles.
Clean-up can be complex when hazardous materials are involved, requiring multiple emergency and environmental agencies to coordinate. These incidents highlight the importance of maintaining safe following distances and remaining alert around large commercial vehicles.
