Portland, OR (May 10, 2026) – Three people suffered serious injuries early Saturday morning following a crash in downtown Portland, according to local authorities.
Emergency crews responded shortly before 1:30 a.m. to the area of West Burnside Street and Northwest 8th Avenue after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle collision.
Investigators said that when first responders arrived, both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles and unable to exit on their own. One of the occupants required extrication using the Jaws of Life.
Portland Fire & Rescue stated that firefighters from Stations 1 and 3 worked together during the hourlong rescue operation to safely remove the victims from the heavily damaged vehicles.
In total, three people were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries.
Police said one of the drivers involved in the crash is being investigated for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (DUII). Officials also confirmed that the second vehicle involved was operated by a rideshare driver who was transporting a passenger at the time of the collision.
The identities of those involved have not been released. The crash remains under active investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims, and we wish them a full recovery.
DUII Crashes and Serious Injury Collisions in Urban Areas
Suspected impaired-driving crashes continue to be a major cause of serious injuries on city streets across the United States. Collisions involving intoxicated drivers can become especially dangerous in busy downtown corridors where rideshare vehicles, pedestrians, and nighttime traffic activity are common.
High-impact crashes frequently leave occupants trapped inside vehicles, requiring specialized rescue operations by firefighters and emergency personnel. Extrication efforts using hydraulic rescue tools are often necessary when severe structural damage prevents victims from safely exiting their vehicles.
Authorities continue reminding drivers to avoid operating vehicles while impaired and to use alternative transportation options when consuming alcohol or other intoxicating substances.
