How Ejections Increase the Risk of Fatal Injuries in Rollover Crashes
Vehicle rollovers are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents, particularly when occupants are ejected. During a rollover, people inside a vehicle can be subjected to multiple forces as the vehicle overturns, increasing the likelihood of severe harm.
Seat belts are one of the most effective safety features for reducing the risk of ejection. Studies have consistently shown that occupants who remain properly restrained are more likely to survive serious rollovers than those who are thrown from the vehicle. Vehicle roof strength, speed, roadway conditions, and occupant positioning can also influence injury outcomes.
When children are involved, properly installed child safety seats and age-appropriate restraints can provide added protection. Following a major rollover, investigators often review occupant restraint use, vehicle movement, roadway evidence, and witness accounts to better understand the sequence of events that led to the crash.
