How Do Bicycle and Vehicle Collisions Often Happen at Intersections?
Intersections are common locations for bicycle crashes because they bring together turning vehicles, through traffic, and crossing riders. Drivers may focus on other cars and overlook a bicyclist, especially when making left or right turns.
Visibility can also be limited by parked cars, signage, or road design. Even small gaps in attention can lead to serious outcomes when a cyclist is involved, since bicycles offer little physical protection.
In many cases, crash reviews look at right-of-way, traffic signals, and the position of each vehicle before impact. Road markings, lighting, and speed may also be considered when examining how a collision between a bicycle and a car occurred.
