Swansea, MA (February 27, 2026) – Two people were killed in a fiery crash early on Friday, February 27, after their vehicle was struck by a suspect fleeing a homicide investigation at the intersection of Route 6 and Route 136 in Swansea.
According to police, officers had been alerted to a vehicle connected to a deadly shooting in Cranston, Rhode Island. Shortly after midnight, officers observed a white Infiniti traveling westbound on Route 6 at a high rate of speed. Moments later, the vehicle crashed into a blue 2022 Subaru Ascent that was traveling southbound on Route 136.
Authorities said the impact caused catastrophic damage, and the Subaru quickly became fully engulfed in flames. First responders and bystanders attempted to extinguish the fire and rescue the occupants, but both victims, a man and a woman from Bristol, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released pending family notification.
Police confirmed the driver of the Infiniti was the suspect in a Cranston homicide that had occurred hours earlier. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries and taken into custody by Cranston police. Officials also recovered a firearm believed to be connected to the earlier shooting.
Authorities stated that although law enforcement had issued alerts about the suspect vehicle, Swansea officers were not actively pursuing it at the time of the crash. The incident remains under investigation by Swansea police, Massachusetts State Police, and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the victims.
Why High-Speed Fleeing Suspects Pose Extreme Risks to Other Drivers
When suspects attempt to flee at high speeds, the danger extends far beyond law enforcement. High-speed driving reduces reaction time, increases stopping distance, and makes collisions far more severe.
Intersections are especially dangerous because vehicles may enter from multiple directions. A speeding vehicle can strike another vehicle with devastating force, often leading to fatal outcomes.
These incidents highlight the importance of coordinated law enforcement responses and public awareness to minimize risks and prevent further loss of life.
