Why Highway Closures Often Follow Fatal Crashes
When a deadly crash occurs on a major interstate like I-440, authorities proceed to close lanes to secure the scene. Investigators must document vehicle positions, roadway markings, and debris patterns to determine how the collision happened.
High-speed roads require careful reconstruction because impact forces can scatter debris across multiple lanes. Closing the roadway also protects emergency crews as they assist victims and remove damaged vehicles.
Even after lanes reopen, traffic delays may continue due to residual congestion. Drivers traveling on busy beltways should remain alert, especially in areas where traffic suddenly slows. Fatal crashes on urban interstates can affect thousands of commuters within a short period of time.
