Richardson, TX (May 6, 2026) – A multi-vehicle crash caused major disruption along US 75 near Campbell Road in Richardson on Tuesday, May 5.
Authorities reported that an 18-wheeler traveling southbound struck the center median while carrying a large load of granite. The impact caused the load to break apart, sending granite across the northbound lanes of traffic. Several vehicles traveling in that direction were unable to avoid the debris.
At least six cars were either struck by the granite or drove over it, resulting in vehicle damage. Emergency units responded to the scene and assessed those involved in the crash. Two people, including the truck driver, were taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Traffic in the southbound lanes was also affected for a period, with multiple lanes closed before reopening later. By late afternoon, the roadway had been cleared, and traffic resumed normal flow.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available.
Our thoughts are with the injured as they continue to recover.
What Happens When Debris Causes Multi-Vehicle Accidents on Highways?
When debris enters active traffic lanes, it can quickly lead to a chain reaction involving multiple vehicles. Drivers often have limited time to react, especially at highway speeds, which increases the risk of damage or injury.
Loose cargo from large trucks is one common source of roadway debris. When loads are not secured properly or shift during transit, materials can spill and create hazards for nearby vehicles. Even small objects can cause serious issues when struck at high speed.
In these situations, vehicle damage often includes tire blowouts, undercarriage impact, or loss of control. Cleanup efforts typically require lane closures to safely remove debris and prevent further incidents. Drivers are encouraged to maintain safe following distances to allow more time to react to unexpected hazards.
