Richmond, VA (January 8, 2026) – A serious chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, brought traffic to a standstill on Wednesday afternoon along Interstate 95 in Richmond.
The collision occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. on January 7, in the southbound lanes near the Bells Rd exit. According to the Virginia State Police, a disabled vehicle had come to a stop in the left lane, triggering a pileup involving five additional vehicles and a tractor-trailer. All six vehicles sustained damage and were rendered inoperable due to the severity of the impact.
Several individuals involved in the crash were taken to nearby medical facilities for evaluation. Authorities confirmed that while injuries were reported, none are believed to be life-threatening at this time. Medics and fire crews provided on-site treatment and facilitated the transport of the injured for further care.
One vehicle became lodged beneath the tractor-trailer, prompting emergency crews to close the left shoulder as they worked to safely extract and remove the wreckage. The cleanup effort caused extended traffic delays throughout the afternoon along this busy stretch of I-95.
Images released by Virginia State Police show the extensive damage to the involved vehicles, with debris scattered across multiple lanes. First responders acted swiftly to secure the scene and assess the safety of all parties involved.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities are working to determine whether speed, visibility, or driver inattention may have played a role in the incident. Richmond commuters are urged to remain cautious when traveling near disabled vehicles, especially along high-speed corridors like I-95.
As of this report, traffic has resumed with limited lane closures still in effect during the ongoing investigation. Our thoughts go out to the victims as we hope for their recovery.
