Riverside, CA (April 2, 2026) – A three-vehicle crash on the northbound 215 Freeway in Riverside left a 3-month-old baby dead and several others injured on Sunday evening, March 29.
The crash occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. when a Honda Civic slowed or stopped due to traffic ahead. A Nissan then rear-ended the Honda, and a Toyota followed by crashing into the back of the Nissan, creating a chain-reaction collision.
The Nissan, carrying two adults and two young children, sustained the most severe damage. The rear of the vehicle was heavily crushed, trapping the occupants inside. Emergency units worked to remove those trapped, including the children who were secured in car seats.
One of the children, identified as 3-month-old Leon Edgington Morales, unfortunately, was pronounced dead. The second child and both adults in the Nissan were seriously injured and taken to nearby hospitals. The Toyota driver suffered moderate injuries, while the occupants of the Honda reported pain but were not taken to a hospital.
The cause of the initial stop remains unclear, and authorities have stated that alcohol or drugs are not believed to have contributed to the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased during this difficult time.
How Chain-Reaction Crashes Happen on Busy Freeways
Chain-reaction crashes often occur when traffic slows suddenly, and following drivers do not have enough time to stop. When one vehicle hits another from behind, it can trigger a sequence of impacts involving multiple cars.
Vehicles caught in the middle of these crashes often take the most damage. This is because they are struck from both the front and rear, increasing the force on passengers inside.
Seat belts and child restraints can reduce harm, but severe impacts may still lead to serious injuries. Spacing between vehicles and attentive driving can help reduce the risk of these types of crashes on busy roads.
