Riverside, CA (January 14, 2026) – A fatal collision occurred early Wednesday morning on southbound Interstate 215 near Central Avenue in Riverside, involving a wrong-way driver, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP dispatch logs show the incident began unfolding around 12:19 a.m. when multiple reports came in of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. Witnesses observed the wrong-way vehicle moving at speeds between 30–40 mph through various lanes.
At approximately 12:25 a.m., the wrong-way vehicle reportedly collided with another car near Central Avenue. Emergency responders, including firefighters and paramedics, arrived within minutes and confirmed that at least one individual had been killed in the crash. The vehicle sustained major damage, and responders initiated a full closure of all southbound lanes of I-215 to secure the scene and begin investigation and cleanup operations.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the crash and whether impairment or other factors played a role remain under investigation.
