Why Bicycle Crashes at Intersections Can Lead to Serious Injuries
Intersections are common locations for bicycle accidents because multiple traffic movements occur simultaneously. Drivers turning through an intersection may not always see cyclists approaching from the side or traveling through the crossing.
Bicycles also offer less protection than passenger vehicles during a collision. Even at moderate speeds, a collision between a car and a cyclist can cause severe injuries due to the lack of physical barriers.
In some situations, a rider may be thrown from the bicycle or become trapped under the vehicle after the impact. These types of crashes often require immediate medical evaluation because injuries may not always be visible right away.
Road design, visibility, lighting, and driver attention can all affect how safely cyclists move through intersections. Clear markings, proper lighting, and careful driving can help reduce the risk of these incidents.
