Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian crashes like this one?
Common factors include drivers failing to see pedestrians in low light, distraction, speeding, and pedestrians crossing outside of marked intersections. Investigators typically look at all of these before determining a cause.
Does a vehicle's speed change a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Yes. Pedestrians struck at higher speeds face a much greater risk of severe or fatal injury than those hit at lower speeds, since the force of impact increases sharply as speed rises.
Where do most pedestrian crashes happen?
Many occur on roadways without marked crosswalks, at night or in low-light conditions, and on streets with higher traffic speeds, particularly where there is limited lighting or visibility.
Are pedestrian crashes more common after dark?
Yes. A large share of pedestrian deaths happen at night, when drivers have less time to see and react to someone in or near the roadway.
What to Do After a Hit-and-Run Crash in Sacramento, CA
If you witness a hit-and-run or are involved in one, try to get a description of the vehicle, its license plate, direction of travel, and any identifying features as soon as it's safe to do so. Call 911 right away so officers and medical help can respond quickly. Anyone injured should be seen by a medical professional even if injuries seem minor at first, since some symptoms take hours to appear. Cooperating with responding officers and providing a written statement while details are fresh can help investigators build the case. If you have cell phone footage, dashcam video, or know of nearby security cameras, let the Sacramento Police Department know, as that kind of evidence is often key to identifying a driver who fled the scene.
