Why Exit Ramp Intersections Present Elevated Collision Risks
Intersections where interstate exit ramps meet local roadways frequently create conflict points between merging and through traffic. Drivers exiting highways must assess cross traffic speed and distance before entering or crossing travel lanes.
Even at moderate speeds, front-end collisions can result when a vehicle misjudges a gap or when visibility is limited due to roadway geometry or traffic flow. Investigators typically review right-of-way, vehicle positioning, and sightlines when evaluating crashes at ramp intersections.
Motorists are reminded to exercise caution when entering roadways from exit ramps and to ensure traffic lanes are clear before proceeding.
