How Alcohol Impairment Affects Driver Reaction and Decision-Making
Alcohol can significantly affect a driver’s ability to react to changing conditions on the road. Even small amounts may slow reaction time, reduce coordination, and make it harder to judge distance or speed.
Drivers under the influence struggle to recognize hazards. This can include pedestrians crossing the road or walking near intersections.
Nighttime hours often increase the danger because visibility is reduced, and fatigue may also affect drivers. When alcohol is involved, these combined factors can make it much harder to respond quickly to unexpected situations.
Crashes involving impaired driving frequently occur near intersections or busy roadways where pedestrians and vehicles share space. Reduced attention and slower reaction times can lead to serious outcomes when drivers are unable to stop or steer away in time.
