How Visibility and Road Conditions Affect Bicycle Safety
Bicycle crashes often occur when visibility is limited, especially during early morning, evening, or nighttime hours. Dark clothing can make it harder for drivers to see cyclists, particularly on roads without strong lighting or clear bike lanes.
Road design also affects safety. Areas with higher traffic speeds or limited shoulder space can increase the risk of serious crashes. Intersections and shared roadways require extra attention from both drivers and cyclists to avoid conflicts.
Using reflective gear, lights, and visible clothing can improve a cyclist’s presence on the road. Drivers are also encouraged to remain alert and maintain a safe distance when traveling near bicycles, especially in areas with common bike traffic.
