San Diego, CA (January 22, 2026) – A 57-year-old man was injured in a hit-and-run crash while riding his bicycle along Fifth Ave in San Diego on January 21. Emergency crews responded after the cyclist was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene following the collision.
According to medical radio traffic, the man had been crossing an intersection with the right of way when a vehicle, stopped at the light, made a sudden right turn and hit the cart attached to the back of his bike. The impact threw the cyclist over the handlebars, causing him to strike the ground face-first. He was not wearing a helmet at the time.
Paramedics reported the man suffered facial trauma, a controlled nosebleed, and a painful avulsion injury to his foot. The situation worsened when the fleeing vehicle reportedly ran over the man’s left foot while leaving the scene. Emergency responders administered pain medication, placed a C-collar, and transported him to Mercy Hospital for further treatment.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident as a felony hit-and-run. No information about the suspect vehicle has been released at this time.
