Why Crosswalk Collisions Still Occur at Intersections
Even at marked crosswalks, pedestrian crashes can happen during turning movements. Drivers making left turns often focus on oncoming traffic and may not immediately see someone crossing in the crosswalk.
Timing and visibility can also affect these situations. If a pedestrian enters the crosswalk while a vehicle is already turning, the driver may have limited time to react. Street lighting and traffic flow can further influence how quickly a person is noticed.
Intersections combine multiple movements, including straight travel and turning vehicles. This increases the likelihood of conflict points where paths cross and the risk of a collision.
