How Bicycle and Vehicle Collisions Often Occur on Urban Roads
Crashes involving bicycles and vehicles frequently happen on busy roads where traffic moves in multiple directions. Cyclists may share lanes with cars or ride close to the edge, which can increase exposure to passing vehicles.
Visibility is often a key factor. Drivers may have difficulty spotting cyclists, especially during turns or when approaching from behind. Road design, including lane width and traffic flow, can also affect how safely bicycles and vehicles interact.
Speed differences between cars and bicycles can add to the risk. Even at moderate speeds, a collision can lead to severe harm due to the lack of protection for the cyclist. Marked bike lanes and clear signage can help reduce these risks in high-traffic areas.
