Sand Point, AK (February 27, 2026) – A 15-year-old was found dead three days after a canoe capsized on Red Cove Lake in Sand Point. The teen disappeared on Monday, February 23, after the canoe he was riding in with two other boys tipped over in the frigid water.
According to reports, the victim and two friends traveled by ATV from a nearby trailhead to the lake and used a community canoe. A fourth friend remained on shore as the three boys paddled on the water. The canoe overturned, and the friend on shore entered the lake to help.
The two other boys were able to get to safety. However, the victim went under the water and did not resurface. He was last seen face down before disappearing beneath the surface.
Search efforts continued for several days. On Thursday, February 26, around 5 p.m., dive teams recovered his body from the lake. Officials also attempted to locate his phone signal during the search, but faced limitations due to limited service in the area.
Authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Water Safety Concerns in Remote Areas of Alaska
Lakes in remote parts of Alaska can present serious risks, especially during colder months. Water temperatures often remain low, which can quickly lead to cold shock or loss of strength if someone falls in unexpectedly.
Small watercraft such as canoes can become unstable if the weight shifts suddenly or if passengers are not prepared for changing conditions. Wearing life jackets and staying close to shore can reduce risk, though emergencies may still occur.
Limited cell service in rural communities can also affect response efforts. In some areas, only basic network coverage is available, which can delay communication during emergencies on the water.
