Bicycle Safety at Intersections in California
Intersections are among the most dangerous spots for cyclists in California, particularly on multi-lane roads with fast-moving traffic. When a cyclist crosses outside of a marked crosswalk, drivers may have less time to spot them, especially if the crossing doesn’t align with where motorists expect pedestrians or cyclists to appear.
California law requires cyclists to follow the same rules of the road as drivers in many situations, including how and where they cross major streets. Marked crosswalks are designed to give both cyclists and pedestrians a predictable, visible path across traffic. Roads like Fairview St in Santa Ana carry significant vehicle volume, and crossing at unmarked points can put cyclists in the path of traffic moving at speed with little warning.
