Portland, OR (August 4, 2026) – At least three people were taken to the hospital after a semi-truck hauling grain collided with an SUV on South Harbor Drive in downtown Portland on Monday afternoon, August 3, causing the truck to overturn and spill grain across the northbound lanes. All three were reported to be alert and speaking with first responders at the scene.
A witness said the truck appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed on Market Street before it failed to negotiate the curve onto Harbor Drive, flipped the SUV on impact, and crossed a median before overturning. Five fire engines and two ambulances responded, and skid marks were visible in the intersection leading up to the crash.
Fuel also spilled onto the roadway, and firefighters spread absorbent material to clean it up. Naito Parkway reopened around 3:30 p.m., but Harbor Drive remained closed in both directions as tow trucks worked to remove the semi. Fire officials said they were unsure when the road would fully reopen because of the debris spread across it.

Because a spill like this can make the road surface uneven or slippery, officials keep a roadway closed until it’s been fully cleared and inspected rather than reopening it while cleanup is still underway. This cautious approach helps prevent a secondary hazard for the next drivers to pass through.
