Emergency units remained at the roadway while traffic came to a standstill. Drivers were directed to alternate routes due to expected extended delays.

How Full Closures Help Crews Manage Injury Crashes Safely
A road may close in both directions when injured people need immediate assistance or when vehicles block travel lanes. A complete closure also gives emergency personnel enough space to work without having to cross traffic, reducing the risk.
Busy commercial corridors can become congested quickly when drivers must turn around or enter nearby parking lots. Limited alternate routes may cause delays to spread beyond the blocked section, especially during periods of heavier traffic.
Before reopening a road, crews may need to remove vehicles, clear debris, and check for spilled fluids or other hazards. They may also examine pavement marks and vehicle positions before anything is moved. These steps can take time, even when the roadway appears passable from a distance, because safe access must be restored for everyone traveling through the corridor.
