Milpitas, CA (June 25, 2026) – A multi-vehicle traffic collision was reported late on Wednesday night on northbound Interstate 680 near the Jacklin Road on-ramp in Milpitas.
According to dispatch records, the first reports came in at approximately 11:58 p.m. Callers reported a large metal post or object in the roadway near lane one. Moments later, motorists reported hearing vehicles strike debris and observed numerous vehicles pulled over along the right shoulder and center divider.
As additional calls came in, reports indicated that several vehicles had been affected. Dispatch logs later suggested that as many as 20 vehicles may have been involved. Among the vehicles reported were a black Toyota RAV4, a brown 2014 Lincoln, a gray Jeep, a white Ford Transit van, a black BMW, and several others that stopped along the freeway.
Traffic was temporarily halted while emergency units worked on the roadway. Tow trucks were requested for multiple disabled vehicles, and lanes gradually reopened as crews cleared the highway. The identities of the people involved and the extent of any injuries were not included in the initial report.
Investigators are continuing to gather information to determine exactly how the chain-reaction accident unfolded. Our thoughts are with everyone affected as they recover from this difficult experience.
How Roadway Debris Can Lead to Multi-Vehicle Freeway Crashes
Objects left on busy highways can create serious hazards for drivers, especially at night when visibility is reduced. Large debris may force motorists to brake suddenly, swerve, or change lanes with little warning. When traffic is moving at freeway speeds, even a small obstruction can lead to a chain reaction involving numerous vehicles.
In multi-vehicle roadway accidents, investigators often examine the source of the debris, traffic conditions, visibility, and patterns of vehicle damage. Statements from drivers and witnesses may also help establish the sequence of events. Crashes involving debris can affect vehicles that never make contact with one another, as sudden evasive actions sometimes contribute to additional roadway conflicts. Careful documentation of vehicle positions and physical evidence can help clarify how a series of collisions developed across multiple lanes.
