Why Rear-End Crashes with Semi-Trucks Can Be Severe
Interstates such as Interstate 29 carry a large mix of passenger vehicles and heavy commercial trucks traveling at highway speeds. When a smaller vehicle is struck from behind by a semi-truck, the difference in size and weight can lead to severe damage.
Large trucks require more distance to slow down or stop, especially when traveling at highway speeds. If traffic ahead changes suddenly or a vehicle slows unexpectedly, the driver of a truck may have limited time to react.
The force created by a rear-end impact from a heavy truck can push a smaller vehicle off the roadway or into nearby ditches or barriers. The speed of the vehicles and the weight of the truck often influence how serious the outcome becomes in these crashes.
