South Kingstown, RI (March 9, 2026) – Three people were taken to the hospital after a house fire early on Sunday morning in South Kingstown. Emergency units were called to a home on Highland Ave at around 7 a.m. after reports of smoke coming from the residence.
When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke pouring from the house; three people inside the home were suffering from smoke inhalation and other injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The fire left the residents displaced from their homes. Assistance is being provided to them through the American Red Cross as they work to recover from the incident.
The full extent of the property damage has not yet been confirmed. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, and additional information may be released later. Our thoughts are with those affected as they continue to recover.
How Smoke Inhalation Injuries Occur During House Fires
Smoke inhalation is one of the most common dangers during residential fires. Breathing in smoke can expose people to toxic gases, heated air, and small particles released as materials burn inside a home.
These conditions can affect the lungs and airways within minutes. People exposed to smoke may experience coughing, breathing difficulty, dizziness, or throat irritation. Even short exposure can lead to medical complications, especially in enclosed spaces.
Medical evaluation is often necessary after a fire because symptoms may appear hours later. Hospitals may check breathing levels, oxygen levels, and signs of airway irritation to determine whether additional treatment is needed after smoke exposure.
