Why Pedestrian Crashes on Major Corridors Can Be Fatal
Major roadways like Division St often carry steady traffic throughout the day and evening. Higher speeds and multiple lanes can increase the danger for pedestrians attempting to cross, especially outside of marked crosswalks or in low-light conditions.
When a vehicle strikes a pedestrian, the person on foot has little protection from the force of impact. Even at moderate speeds, injuries can be severe or fatal. Visibility, lighting, and traffic flow are often factors examined after these types of incidents.
In busy commercial corridors, drivers and pedestrians both share responsibility for roadway safety. Staying alert, using designated crossings, and reducing speed in high-traffic areas may help lower the risk of similar tragedies.
