St. Louis, MO (March 11, 2026) – Three people were injured on Wednesday, March 11, in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 270 northbound at Interstate 44 in St. Louis County.
Emergency units responded around 8:20 a.m. after a 2018 Toyota Highlander stopped for traffic ahead on the northbound side of I-270. A 2015 Jeep Patriot traveling behind the SUV reportedly slid, struck the concrete median barrier, and then collided with the Highlander.
Officials said the Jeep sustained total damage while the Toyota had extensive damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
The drivers of both vehicles were injured in the crash. The 34-year-old driver of the Toyota from Saint Louis and the 52-year-old driver of the Jeep from Festus were taken to nearby hospitals. A juvenile passenger in the Toyota was also hurt and transported for medical evaluation.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
Our thoughts are with those injured as they receive medical care.
Why Highway Traffic Slowdowns Can Lead to Rear-End Crashes
Rear-end crashes often occur when traffic suddenly slows or stops on busy highways. Drivers approaching stopped vehicles may not always have enough distance to slow down safely.
Road conditions can make the situation worse. Wet pavement, debris, or sudden braking may cause vehicles to slide, especially if drivers are traveling too close to the vehicle ahead.
When a vehicle loses control, it may strike barriers or other nearby vehicles. Concrete median barriers are designed to prevent cross-traffic collisions, but impacts with them can still lead to significant vehicle damage and injuries.
Maintaining safe following distances and reducing speed during heavy traffic can help lower the risk of rear-end crashes on major highways.
