Why Hydroplaning Can Lead to Highway Collisions
Hydroplaning happens when a layer of water builds up between a vehicle’s tires and the road surface. When this occurs, drivers can lose traction and steering control.
Wet highways increase the risk, especially at higher speeds. Even small amounts of standing water can cause a vehicle to slide unexpectedly.
When a vehicle hydroplanes in traffic, it may drift into adjacent lanes or strike nearby vehicles. Multi-vehicle crashes can happen quickly if drivers do not have enough time or distance to react. Proper tire maintenance and reduced speeds during rain can help lower the risk of this type of accident.
